Why Finer Mesh Is Not Always Better
Finer mesh increases surface contact between water and carbon, but it also increases pressure drop across the bed. In a fixed system, that means the pump works harder and flow rate drops over time as the bed compacts. Coarser mesh trades some adsorption efficiency for consistent flow. Ash content is the inorganic residue left after the carbon is burned off, mostly silica, calcium, and other minerals carried over from the source material. Moisture content affects two things: the weight you are actually paying for, and how the carbon performs immediately after installation. Carbon shipped at 15% moisture instead of the standard 5 to 8% means you are paying carbon-grade prices for water weight, and the bed needs extra flushing before it reaches full adsorption capacity.
